Welcome to the TWRC – Guardians of Tasmania’s Wildlife

Tasmania – a place which is completely different in itself. The land here is green, wild and full of life. But not only greenery, the biggest treasure here is its unique and rare wildlife species. Such creatures are found here which are not found in any other corner of the world.

But when there are such precious creatures, it becomes equally important to save and take care of them. This is where a very special organization comes forward – Tasmanian Wildlife Rehabilitation Council (TWRC). This organization takes care of all those injured, sick and orphaned wild animals who come into trouble due to some reason. TWRC works to cure these animals and release them back into the forest.

What is TWRC? – Not an organization, a lifeline

TWRC is not an ordinary organization. It is the united voice of all those wildlife carers (wildlife care volunteers) spread across Tasmania who are engaged day and night in the service of animals.

It is a non-profit organization, meaning that its goal is not to make money, but to do good for animals. TWRC works closely with the government’s Wildlife Management Branch to ensure that every animal gets the right treatment, love and freedom.

Its work is not just limited to care, but it also creates coordination between the government, local community and caretakers to create a better future for animals. Most of the organization’s work is done through donations, government grants and people’s help.

Our Goal – To give Animals a Better Life

TWRC’s core goal is:

“To achieve the best outcomes for sick, injured and orphaned wild animals – from treatment to reintroduction to wild life – through a good coordination between the government, caretakers and society.”

Towards this goal, TWRC does many important things – whether it’s policy making, raising awareness, or improving standards of care. TWRC’s vision is clear – to save every animal and return it its freedom.

What does TWRC do? – Not just rescue, more

TWRC doesn’t go out to rescue animals itself, but it trains, supports and represents the people who do. Its work is very wide-ranging:

  • Being the voice of the caregivers: TWRC communicates the problems and needs of those who serve animals to the government and society.
  • Education and training: The organization conducts various training programs to improve animal care, such as how to handle an injured kangaroo, or when and how to abandon an orphaned animal.
  • Participation in policy making: TWRC makes suggestions to the government so that wildlife policies are practical and in the interest of animals.
  • Awareness raising: It makes the general public understand the importance of wild animals in our lives, and why it is important to save them.
  • Funding and support: The organization promotes a spirit of cooperation between the government, society and carers and manages resources.

Wild Life Glimpses – Heartwarming Stories

Welcome to the TWRC – Guardians of Tasmania's Wildlife

The work of TWRC is not just about papers or plans, but real stories that touch the heart.

For example:

  • A tiny joey (baby kangaroo) who is curiously looking out of its mother’s pouch for the first time and exploring the world.
  • An injured Tawny Frogmouth (a special type of owl) who is slowly becoming able to fly.
  • An adorable wombat baby who is finding comfort in human care by clinging to toys like teddy bears.
  • A courageous Tasmanian Devil named Milly who is recovering from injury and running around the wild again.
  • Some pademelon joeys who are slowly adjusting to life in the wild under human care.
  • All these are reminders that every animal’s life is precious and organisations like TWRC are a ray of hope for them.

The TWRC Team – People with Hearts

TWRC is run by an experienced and dedicated team who not only give direction to the organisation, but also feel a deep connection to each animal:

  • President: Oma Rodger
  • Treasurer: Katrina Stafford
  • Secretary and Communications Officer: Lyndall White
  • Member: Barbara Walton

They all share the same passion – “Let every voice of nature be heard and let every animal get its life back.”

To the future – a step towards a stronger network

TWRC’s vision is not just to save individual animals, but to create a network where:

  • Every carer gets support
  • Every animal in need gets immediate help
  • Government and organisations work together to formulate policies
  • People become aware and come forward to help
TWRC wants the whole of Tasmania to unite and stand up for its wildlife.

You can get involved too – your part in saving a life

If you live in Tasmania, or just love wild animals, there are lots of ways you can support TWRC’s mission:

  • Donate: To help treat injured animals and get vital resources.
  • Become a member: If you want to care for or train yourself.
  • Spread the word: Tell your friends and family how special Tasmanian animals are.
  • Volunteer: Take part in a training or help out at an event.

Every little step can go a long way.
